Football and the knowledge of God

There certainly is a negativity about different religions in certain Christian histories and theologies, and I think football can teach us something here! The problem in football has been that when supporting a team, it means that in someway the opposition can be demonized and this has caused rioting and I assume it will in the future.   With religion one has basic universal beliefs and then we move on to particular beliefs and this can cause a ring fence.  When two sets of contrary beliefs touch there is friction. Out of friction can also come respect.  Manchester United playing Liverpool in a Derby… They are both good football teams… They can leave and one day one team will win the football cup and its trimmings.

At times Christianity and Islam can be like that. Who is telling the truth?  This is when mythologizing can start, and misconstrued accusations can fly.   Some modern ideas for example attack certain aspects of God in another religion without actually taking notice of what their belief system is actually saying. 

One silly idea is to say that some monotheists are not monotheists but monist!  I’m not mentioning any religion at the moment, but I found it disrespectful and prejudiced.

Last time we began to look at the opening of Genesis chapter 1. We learned that the elements which I believe came from nothing (ex nihilo), were the building blocks for the Lords big project of creation. These building blocks of matter are mentioned in many myths and legends from Egypt to Babylon. However, the Genesis account is a complete contrast to all of these other myths. When God began creating...

  When we look at our own life, our beginnings can influence what our end can also be. We all ask questions of where we have come from and where we are going.   Although these can be scientific questions, they can also be existential, moral, and spiritual questions. I found Rabbi Sacks really important on my understanding of Genesis one and two.   Some of the reflections I came to were heavily influenced by his thinking.   In Genesis one and two we can already see God’s love for his creation.   The way rabbi Sacks brought this out in his Covenant and conversation from my point of view is fantastic.   I really enjoyed reading it because it is not dry such as the higher criticism of J, E , and P… and taking the razor to the text that ought not to have ever have been done.  Taken from wikipedia I am also aware of the ancients who also attempted to interpret Genesis allegorically, philosophically, scientifically.
