The Baptism of Jesus, a picture of the Trinity working together with emphasis on the Holy Spirit

E.H Bickersteth now moves onto looking at the Holy Spirit as distinct from the Father and the Son.  Later on he will look at the Person of the Holy Spirit, then later his Divine attributes completed with Why the Holy Spirit deserves our worship. 

 

An appropriate place to start then is with the baptism of Jesus.

21  Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.” Luke 3:21-22 NASB

The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are found altogether here at the Baptism of Jesus.  The Heavens open up, the Holy Spirit takes on the form of a dove, and the Father speaks to his son, that he is pleased with him.

Here then in this passage we have three distinct persons and in Jesus complete obedience Jesus has a Trinitarian baptism.  I think it is only natural that we follow in our baptism that this is Trinitarian also such as in Matthew 28.

Last time we began to look at the opening of Genesis chapter 1. We learned that the elements which I believe came from nothing (ex nihilo), were the building blocks for the Lords big project of creation.   When we look at our own life, our beginnings can influence what our end can also be. We all ask questions of where we have come from and where we are going.   Although these can be scientific questions, they can also be existential, moral, and spiritual questions. I found Rabbi Sacks really important on my understanding of Genesis one and two.   Some of the reflections I came to were heavily influenced by his thinking.   In Genesis one and two we can already see God’s love for his creation.   The way rabbi Sacks brought this out in his Covenant and conversation from my point of view is fantastic.   I really enjoyed reading it because it is not dry such as the higher criticism of J, E , and P… and taking the razor to the text that ought not to have ever have been done.  Taken from wikipedia I am also aware of the ancients who also attempted to interpret Genesis allegorically, philosophically, scientifically. Tertullian Tertullian the North African of Berber origin continued on with the tradition. In fact, he taught Cyprian who then gave rise to the great St Augustine another North African theologian.
