1 And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. 1 Corinthians 2:1
He uses a verbal participle twice in the aorist form when he is talking
about himself. It is just an event that happened.  Its not a perfect so it is an act that was done. And I came.  St Paul then says that   he didn't come in some sort of show.   Verse two carries on with the real reason he came...

and when I came (aorist partiple x2) to you brothers, I came not with the superiority
of words (ὑπεροχὴν λόγου 1 Corinthians 2:1)

 or (ἢ little particle) proclaiming the wisdom of God to you

Herman Bavinck on the object of law: in relation to law of thoughts, civil law and natural law

  04 08 2021 The Object of the Law (Reformed Ethics; Herman Bavinck; edited by John Bolt; pgs 224-226) I made these coasters last year by hand   As a generalized starting point, we begin by looking at our disposition in light of the law.   This is his general introduction to this section. The law then can only measure the outward disposition of the mind.   It cannot pass judgement on the inward disposition of the mind (Schleiermacher pg 224).   To a certain extent Bavinck agrees with this but not completely: “However, the law also regulates the essence, the nature of a human person.     Notwithstanding, there is some truth in Schleiermacher’s statement.”   The law for Bavinck is directed towards the human ‘will’ which is the ‘seat of morality’.    To a certain extent then it regulates ‘our essence and nature’ which comes from the actions we do.   For these reasons then the law does not care about what we look like or how tall...

Bavick on Modern Rationalism and the Conscience.

 I chose the following picture because being separated from God is like having a tree without a water source.  In the same way for me rationalism has the same type of effect.  Anyhow putting these ideas to one side what can Herman Bavinck the Master theologian teach us today? Photo by icon0.com from Pexels So then we come to the modern era with the so-called scientific way of looking at the human person.   Darwinism being on the ascendancy and evolutionary progressive ideas coming to the forefront leaving behind and detaching reality from law and scripture.   An oversimplification by me but something serious happened to throw us into the modern world.   This is why it is so important to read Hermann Bavinck's reformed ethics.     In the world of ideas, the human being takes the place of God, and he is in the driving seat.   Are we any better for it?
