God and revelation 2

At an epistemological level it is not easy to separate these two doctrines. As Calvin would say: 'The knowledge of God and of ourselves are inextricably linked' and then he goes and says that we don't really know which one came first. But then he says that although that is the case he is going to start from 'above' rather than from below. I tend to agree with this method because it is logical absurdity to try to understand God from the finite side of things. Even in mathematics an infinite can contain the finite but never the other way around. In religious traditions this spills into the very fabric of worship. The infinite deity must always reveal himself first to the worshipper. Thus, in Hinduism, it is interesting that a deity has to be invited into a Murti. Also, the Unknowable cannot be known directly but always mediated through the Trimurti and the plethora of the gods. But the important point is that there can be communication between the infinite and the

God and Revelation

God and Revelation As has been said, this paper takes the existence of God as a given. So whether or not people choose to believe in a deity, it does not alter the 'fact'. But at the same time this is not an absolutist position that will not listen to reason. On the contrary, Gunton has done much needed work in the realm of reason and revelation and out of the fruit of his work he raised a point in a footnote; 'There can thus take shape a claim for the truth and distinctiveness of Christianity which is also truly open to conversation with other cultures and religions' (Gunton- 1996 page212The One The Three and the Many). There can thus take place an important dialogue that seeks to understand. The world tends to show the opposite. Such as the Taliban that force women to cover even their faces or the shooting dead of doctors that practice abortion. Perhaps contrary to common religious thinking, 'there is common ground even with special revelation'.  But at

Christian epistemology and other Theological epistemologies. Critical discussions..

I started writing this a few years ago and then I put it on the backburner.  Now however I want to start sharing theological thoughts that interest me.  Originally the title was   'Christian epistemology and Islamic epistemology. critical discussion.'  Hold on a minute... The Gospel is supposed to be public knowledge that is open to all, no matter what religious background they have.  Over recent years I have got interested in the writings of Rabbi Sacks... He has an amazing intellect and I think we can all learn a thing or two from him. After all the Old Testament, Tevrat, Zebur,  The Torah . התורה We share this... or shall I say we all agree that these are Holy Scripture given to us from God.  God is far bigger than we are yet He takes an interest in our puny lives or are they puny? Dogmatic theology of religions is concerned with a dialogue that takes place with Christianity and Islam in a pluralist world. The usual starting point for the pluralist is
